Challenge
The end-to-end visibility of data has allowed adequate transparency into the cold chain operations of our case study. The data collected from a number of completed shipments proves that the main challenge encountered during these cold chain shipments was the shipment not traveling within the preset thresholds. (2°C - 8°C).
Approach
Because of availability and access to this type of data, there was a need to strategize on the best possible way to curb these inadequacies. Therefore, they were able to put in place measures to improve the efficiency of their cold chain operations and some of the problem-solving solutions that were adopted included:
1. Adding more ice packs to the styrofoam packs being used for the transportation of their temperature-sensitive assets;
2. Carrying out the shipment with the 50L cold box, as this helps to regulate the temperature settings of their shipments;
3. Assigning more time to precondition before placing the temperature-
sensitive items in the cold boxes or styrofoam packs; and
4. Ensuring that the shipment was monitored in real-time throughout the entire shipment duration (from preconditioning to delivery of items).
Achieved Result
There was a remarkable improvement in the entire cold chain operations of the case study owing to the fact that an innovative decision was made from the data available in real time. In this light, a success rate of 94% was achieved.
